  • Here is a video I made which you can see here. Of course someone came along and plagiarized it as per usual. But my video has actual credits that belong to the artist, unlike the knock off video which has credits that belong to someone else. It is a known fact that people often steal my blogging ideas, art concepts and character creations, including quotes that I have created and try to pull them off as their own. I don’t know any of those people, or take notice of them, but you can clearly see where they get their ideas. They are what we call unoriginal.

Here are some notable “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” singers of the 1920s and 1930s, and their “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” techniques. A range of “Poops,” “Bops,” “Baps,” “Bups,” and “Boops.” Like I stated “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” is basically just adapted from scat singing, and it was originally originated by African-Americans. Helen Kane saw Baby Esther (a Florence Mills impersonator who dance and sang) in 1928, and took direct inspiration to scat sing in her act. Sadly there is no footage of Baby Esther or audio but in 1928, she had the same booking agent as Helen Kane - so do the math. Scat singing and baby-talk singing are two different singing methods - merged into one. Gertrude Saunders (Bessie Smith’s Rival), was the female originator of scat singing. And Louis Armstrong was the male originator, and he even taught Cab Calloway how to scat sing. Betty Boop is best known for her scat singing and lives on for the “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” singers of the 1920s and 1930s.

And for those confused, Gertrude Saunders (female scat singing originator), and Baby Esther - were not the same person. It was a little confusion, due to historians hiding the true origins of Baby Esther aka Little Esther. Also the baby-talk singing style was “common” and goes back to the mid 1900s, meaning it couldn’t be stolen because everyone already did it, which is why Helen Kane lost in court because “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” was a form of scat singing, and the baby-talk singing style had been done for many years prior to Helen making her singing style a cult hit. Although Helen’s singing wasn’t original, she made “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” famous. Baby Esther was never once associated with Helen Kane and was mainly compared to black stars.

Never new I needed this in my life till now

Just thought everyone should know. I followed some leads, and they indicate that Mae Barnes was another originator of “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” long before Helen Kane. You can see her scat sing at 7:40 in a Chicago jazz tribute. Lil Armstrong is also featured in the video, the same singer who also scat sung. According to my research, “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” didn’t originate in the Broadway musical “Good Boy” it actually originated in the all-black Broadway “Shuffle Along.”

  • Yes, Little Ann Little was that cute “voice” of Betty Boop in a majority of the cartoons from 1931-1932. I had to do extensive research to find out what she did and what she didn’t do. Turns out she did a lot. Ann performs “Do Something,” and “Don’t Take My Boop-Oop-a-Doop Away” in the 1932 animated cartoon Boop-Oop-a-Doop. Ann and Margie Hines can often get mixed up, as both sound somewhat similar. But according to research Margie only did the “Boop-Oop-a-Doop” role “at various times” up until the 27th of October 1931. Both Mae Questel and Ann Little, were hired in 1931, so there were three people doing the role on and off. But yes just to clarify, Ann is that 2nd “cute” voice. Sadly today Ann is not remembered much for her role. Margie Hines got tribute, but Ann is forgotten, and today only Mae Questel is honored. Apart from doing the voice in the early cartoons and on various radio broadcasts, Ann was also Betty Boop in person from 1933 up until the late 1940s. Unlike Mae or Bonnie, Ann was more slender, and she “never” entered a “Helen Kane Impersonation Contest”, she just had it. She is not to be mistaken for the “plump” 1920s Paramount star Ann Little. There are two “Ann Littles” by the way.

Well I ain’t got nobody,
And nobody cares for me…
And… I’m sad and lonely…
Won’t somebody come and take a chance with me?

I’ll sing sweet love songs honey all the time,
If you’ll come and be my sweet baby mine.

Cause I ain’t got nobody,
And nobody cares for me…
